Chapter 9

CHAPTER 9: Nicolai Meets William

In a desolate city, somewhere far, far away from Nicolai, a man named Kalcustus is drunk and unconscious. He is the king of the Corrupt Lands. Looking down the hall, in horror, Kalcustus sees a dark figure with a sword walk down the hall. The figure raises the sword, and Kalcustus was dead before he hit the ground.

William, a bold and daring young man at a great meeting, feels quite bored. The annoying introductions and speeches are nothing like the battles he so much like. Only person I know to like these pompous speeches and magnificent banquets is my servant, Jemm. Maybe I'll go talk to that elven commander, judging from his robes. He looks to be about the same age as I am, as well as being bored.

Nicolai sees a young man walking towards him. Before he even has a chance to talk to the man, The man introduces himself.

"Hello. I'm William. Who are you?"

"Oh, uhm, I'm Nicolai. Nice to meet you."

"Same to you. Banquets like this don't suit you?"

"Nope, they don't."

"Ah. Well, it seems that the meeting will continue tomorrow. See you tomorrow!"

"Okay. See you!"

CHAPTER 8: Central City

As soon as the group of eastern peoples entered Central City, another large group within welcomed them. Nicolai observed Central City. Some areas were congenial to his tastes, but the palace was not overblown with decoration. Nicolai smiled. At least the building they were to meet in was fine with him.

The emperor of the Central Lands came out and introduced himself. He was, from appearance, just a normal person, with a kind face. His voice was perfect as he spoke.

"Ah, hello there. So now that we are all here, let me introduce myself. I am Maximillian."

Slowly, everyone began to introduce themselves. Nicolai took note of who was who. Nicolai then wrote down all the names of everyone in a notebook he had been bringing.

Chapter 7

CHAPTER 7: Ambush Halfway to Central City

In Capital Port, a large mob of people from the eastern half of the world had gathered. This group included the elves, dwarves, ninjas, easterners, barbarians, tekkians, tribal peoples, holy peoples, southerners, and samurai . the elves were the last to arrive, having been the last to leave their capital city. Everyone else, fearful of being late, gathered in Capital Port for two weeks before the meeting. Therefore, a very large army gathered up in the middle of Capital Port and began heading off on the trade road.

Halfway on the trade road, an random explosion missing everyone blasted the road apart. The mob dissipated and panic ran through everyone.

Two dark-cloaked men holding enchanted swords yelled, "Attack!"

As their hoods fell off, Nicolai gasped in horror. "Klem? Zenon?"

Indeed, the two mages were Klem and Zenon. Zenon was another high-ranking elven noble who vanished a month ago. A battle began. Zenon stabbed Phineas in the leg as Phineas attempted to punch Klem. Klem summoned a black mist, choking everyone but Zenon and his subordinates. The battle raged on. Nicolai, in a fit of desperation fired an special elven arrow that could not miss, called a U-Arrow.the U-Arrow surged forward and struck Klem in the eye.

"YARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!" cried Klem in pain. Klem fell and was trampled by several people.
The condensation of the mist told Zenon his partner was dead and his body had been transmuted into heavy matter and imploded on itself.

"You'll pay for that, Nicolai!" yelled Zenon. Zenon charges forward only to be forcefully changed into his actual form, the female of Lavia. Lavia was an elven priest who wandered on the Isle of the Ghosts and was never seen again. Lavia silences Nicolai and removes all his mana so he cannot shoot a U-Arrow again, before pouncing, only to miss and break a couple bones.

That's when the Nicolai disappears. Lavia stares in horror.

Nicolai's projection has succeeded, and he drags Lavia to the edge of the battle, and questions her.

"Who sent you? Who else is with you?"

Lavia, shaking with fear, answers,"Klem was with me. Any other questions?"

"Not who was with you in that ambush, who are you working with in your headquarters?

"I'm part of a organization called the-"

Another dark-cloaked man appears and stabs Lavia in the neck. Lavia falls over and dies instantly. The man teleports away. Just now, the last of the cloaked ambushers have been defeated. Nicolai then tells Sarah and Urza all his theories and everything he heard from Lavia.

Something is not right.

Chapter 6

CHAPTER 6: Over the Capital Sea

It had taken the entire day just to get to Amorin. However, since the Great Meeting of Everyone was to take place in two days, a weary band of elves board several ships and leave for Capital Port. Nicolai is surprisingly quiet as the armies gather on the boats. Urza, Sarah, Nicolai, Aglard, and their subordinates board the most magnificent ship, a golden steamer with several sails. Something about the ship as a whole fits the tastes of Nicolai, who thinks the ship is lavish but not lavish to a point of eye-straining. Sarah, on the other hand, asks Nicolai a question.

"Does this pink and purple ship suit you Nicolai? Sorry, there wasn't a better ship."

"Wait, pink and purple? Last I thought, this ship was greenish-bluish." pipes in Primo.

Sarah then realizes that the ship automatically finds what color each person hates and transforms into that color, but only to an extent where the ship is still pleasing. No one knows the true color of the ship Magnificence.

*          *          *

Following this, a meal is eaten by all the ones on the ship, before everyone heads off to bed.

The next morning, Nicolai awakens to find a beautiful sunrise, closely observed by Sarah. Primo's snores are evident, and so Nicolai shuts the door to the cabin hastily, but Sarah still notices.

"Hello, Nicolai. What are you doing so early in the morning?"

"Oh, nothing. This is considered late compared with my normal wake-up time."
Both statements are true.

"Really?"Sarah says in astonishment."You get up that early?"

"Of course. Why not? I mean, is five hours of sleep bad?"

Sarah, being an experienced elven medic, replies,"Of course! Five hours of sleep is barely any! You need to get more sleep Nicolai. I'm surprised you don't pass out every-"

BLARRRRRRRRRR!

Sarah is cut off by a foghorn signifying the docking in Capital Port. In the cabin, a noise that sounds like a combination between a cough, snort, snore, sneeze, and wheeze is heard. Nicolai and Sarah rush in to the cabin to find Primo lying on his bed, having woken everyone who slept through the foghorn. (which was a lot of people, since the cabin blocked most external sounds)

CHAPTER 5: The Way to Amorin, Part 2

For centuries, elves have had to use boats and sail to Capital Port in order to continue the historic bond between the Capital Land and the Elf-Country. However, as the seas were rough and elven boats were not particularly strong, elves had to use magic to determine the best naval routes. The result was a route between Capital Port and a then-small elven village called Amorin. Therefore, what is observed on this day is a elven army riding to Amorin from Ezedor.

*          *         *

An hour later, Phineas, one of the younger elves in this army, stops riding. Due to the fact that Phineas is in the front of the army, his abrupt stop leads Nicolai to half-fall from his horse. Urza and Sarah nearly fall off behind him, and miss crashing into Nicolai by a few centimeters. Behind them a rude word is heard from one of the elves in the back of the army, and that's when someone angrily asks, "What's the holdup?"

"Why is Klem not here?"replies Phineas. Phineas has extraordinary perception skills and can always eventually notice when something is missing.

Klem's absence from the group worries Urza. Klem is the highest ranked elven noble, second to Nicolai. The group wonders what could have happened to him just as they reach Amorin.

Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4: The Way to Amorin, Part 1

Shortly after Nicolai escaped the party, he finds Klem sitting in his house with three others playing cards. Nicolai performs simple magic and identifies the four as Amos Marwick, Alfred Marwick (Amos and Alfred are cousins), and Edward Teach. All four are drinking wine and gambling. Five minutes after Nicolai came in to the dim rooms illuminated only by a single lightbulb hanging precariously from the ceiling, Edward takes some notice of Nicolai. Showing his blackened teeth, he talks to Nicolai.

"Ello, Klaus." says Edward.

Nicolai, touchy at being called Klaus, grunts and says: "My name is not Klaus. It's Nicolai."

Klem, just now realizing Nicolai's presence, flashes a slight but unmistakable look of horror before dashing up and escaping the room. The cloud of dust and dirt that flew up due to this hasty exit causes confusion for several minutes, during which time three bottles of wine spill, two bottles of beer spill, one wineglass shatters, and poker cards and chips fly everywhere. Nicolai is left to help clean up the mess along with Amos, Alfred, and Edward.

Thirty minutes later, Nicolai is riding with fellow elves through the Maga forest, which is at a height of splendor in springtime. Notable members of this group include Urza, Queen of the Elves, Sarah, daughter of Urza and Princess of the Elves, Zaarn, an estranged elf who came from the northern elf-land, Philinus, one of the best enchanters in the world, and Nicolai himself.

Nicolai ponders all possible reasons for Klem's speedy exit, and the fact that he vanished since then. No one could tell what was going on underground, one hundred miles away.

*          *          *

At the very location just described are several people in dark robes, similar to those robes of the ambushers in Marston Forest.

The leader of the group clears his throat and begins to speak.

"As you all know, the elven group is heading to Central City for the meetings. They will not make it, am I right, Klem?"

Another one, highly nervous, replies.

"Y-yes sir. They will not."

Devilish smiles tend to spell trouble...

Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3: The Meeting of the Elves

Nicolai and his posse return home thirty minutes after the end of the party. The next day, at 5:30 in the morning, the ever-vigilant Nicolai leads his subordinates (all of them this time) west. Nicolai is considered an important elf, and the meeting to take place in Central City begins with all important people of one area going to their capital, and then from there following their leader to Central City.

The band of elves reach Ezedor after a mere twenty minutes. As soon as the guards at the gate see Nicolai's blowing scarf, they open the gate to let him through. Ezedor is a city of nobles and royalty. There are rarely any elf peasants, and no elf hobos. However, Nicolai prefers smaller villages as living accommodations, rather than the lavish decor of Ezedor. The most lavish areas were those near the center of Ezedor, but unfortunately that was where Nicolai had to go. Nicolai realizes that he is extremely early, yet cannot seem to make cause of why there is no on else here.

Five hours later, Nicolai's great-aunt Urza arrives with Nicolai's sister Sarah. The elves already arrived there start the meeting there. Last to arrive is Klem, whom Nicolai sees as changed a lot since he last saw Klem. Klem is no longer a bright and happy elf with a bounce in his step, he now drudges along with gray shadows underneath his eyes.

Aglard, being the oldest elf, starts the conversation. "As you all know, we have been summoned to Central City for a rallying so that we can rid this world of all evil."
Aglard's magnificent voice booms. "Are there any questions pertaining to this meeting?"

Nicolai was surprised that there were no questions. This could only mean one thing. All the elves, like himself, were determined to overthrow Doom to the point where some may have spent long nights studying about Doom. Since there were no questions, the purpose of the meeting had been defeated and the meeting was over. Just like that. At five minutes, it was the second shortest meeting Nicolai had ever been to (excluding a particularly short meeting where an accident involving hot peppers and fire had postponed the meeting). Nicolai did know something, though. He needed to ask Klem some questions.

Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2: Ambush in Marston Forest

Nicolai continues to lead his troops further into the forest. The Marston Forest is one of the more tame forests. Even though occasionally a traveler would come to a bad end in the forest, this was extremely rare as it seemed that the forest, as a whole, was afraid of the elves. As he walks over the fallen leaves and branches, Nicolai becomes aware of a moaning noise. Grrrrraaaaggghhhghgghg...

Travis, one of Nicolai's subordinates, is scared out of his wits when a fellow subordinate named Jeremiah draws two daggers, ready for battle. However, the battle never comes as Nicolai walks forward and sees Simon, spread-eagled and on the ground, a faint groan escaping from his lips. As soon as Nicolai comes into sight, Simon bursts into speech.

"L-look out! There a-are b-b-ban-d-d-dits h-here!"

Nicolai's confusion instantly changes into awe as twelve masked troops attack. Simon gets up, drawing his sword, but is knocked back into a corner and disappears from sight. Jeremiah uses his Special Ability (Jeremiah's Ability is the "Bloody X", using his two blades to cut an x in the enemy). Two of the soldiers are hits with the "Bloody X", and go down. As they are thrown backwards, they knock into three more, knocking them all unconscious. Nicolai's bow is ready in a flash, and he releases seven arrows at once, a mighty feat, even for an elf. All seven arrows are hits, but not all of them fatal. Five more masked men go down, and the remaining two have been hit the leg with arrows, who attempt to flee but trip on branches. The two are killed, and it is then that Nicolai realizes what has happened to Simon.

Simon lies in a corner with half a sword hilt stuck inside of him. With his last breath, he tells Nicolai that the message was delivered to Hi-En and Li. Nicolai has now realized that this elf has given his life for the sake of everyone else on the planet, for now all the leaders of all nations will be meeting in Central City, and then perhaps Doom will be finally brought down. Nicolai gets on his mount and rides away with his posse of subordinates.

Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1: Exposition

An elven commander looks out on the starry night. His gaunt expression is the only way he expresses his feeling, which is a mixture of anxiety and worry. He turns around to see one of his subordinates who has noticed his gaunt expression and has left the party going on in the mansion behind him.

"Sir, what's wrong?" asks the subordinate.

His master does not reply.

"Sir, what's wrong?" repeats the subordinate.

His master's silence leads the subordinate to walk up to his master. Just as he does, his master turns around and walks back into the building. The confused subordinate chases after his master, shouting his master's name.

"Nicolai! Nicolai! Wait up!" shouts the subordinate.

Nicolai has well recovered from his gaunt expression and nearby guests have taken no notice that he was gone for a period at all. Nicolai turns and asks to his subordinate: "Yes, Primo?"

The subordinate named Primo repeats once more with "Sir, what's wrong?"

"Nothing. I have been expecting Simon to arrive here for three hours. I wonder if something may have happened to him?"

Primo's surprised look tells Nicolai that Primo has forgotten the event completely.

Both master and servant are quiet for the rest of the party, although for different reasons.

Three hours later, the party guests have left, leaving Nicolai and his subordinates alone in the large hall.
After the last remains of the party have been cleaned up, Nicolai makes an announcement.

"As some of you may have noticed, Simon has still not arrived yet. I fear something may have happened to him, so I will leave in fifteen minute's time to search for him. Any volunteers to come with me?"

Every last hand in the hall, excluding Nicolai's, was raised.

Nicolai takes a good deal of his elves into the forest, and leaves Primo's squad in charge of defending the mansion in case of bandits or something evil.

Among those who went with Nicolai are Ladbrook, one of the best pikemen in the region, Jeremiah, an assassin hired by Nicolai two years ago, and Travis, an elf who is decent at using pikes, bows, and magic, but never finished any apprenticeships to those trades.

Nicolai's troops ride on their horses on into the forest, unsure of what they might find...

Meanwhile, five hundred miles away, his master clasps his fingers together and smiles. He has been released after being trapped in a void for three thousand years exactly. His servant's plan has worked. He is free. Doom is free.
